THE STORY

The Inga community of Aponte is comprised of descendants of the ancient, pre-Hispanic Incas. Significant contact resumed in the 1990's, but unfortunately, was mostly criminal; with illegal plantations and violence. In the last decade, this thankfully changed, leading to the area becoming a safe zone for the Inga tribe. Illegal crops were replaced with coffee! Smallholder properties were planted with the Caturra variety, known for its increased quality at higher altitudes. Aponte sits in the department of Nariño, at an average elevation of 2150masl. This elevation, combined with the fertile volcanic soil of the Nariño region, makes for an exceptionally complex and sweet coffee. Cherry is processed on each producers property, drying the processed coffee on stacked raised beds on their farms.
