Coffee from Peru arrives on UK shores at a different time from most other origins, and this is a beautiful coffee from a lesser-known producing country.

It comes to you all the way from the town and region of San Jose de Lourdes, and is grown by various small holder farmers. Located in the north west of Peru, the Cajamarca region has the combination of altitude, great varieties, lush terrain that are required for great coffee production, and a move among the local farmers towards higher quality methods paints a promising picture for the future of the specialty coffee in this area.

You may be less familiar with Peru than other coffee producing countries, and it’s flown under the radar for several years. Until recently the remoteness of the coffee farms and the small size of the average farm has prevented much of the single-farm differentiation that has allowed for microlot development and marketing in other growing regions. But as with everything else in specialty coffee, this is changing quickly as well.

This coffee brews great in all methods – it’s a quintessential all-rounder. In filter we get a lovely balance of crips blackberry, with a jammy plum sweetness, and a sticky toffee finish. In espresso, everything is turned up a notch, the blackberry jumps out on the nose, and the plum turns to a jammy sweetness, which will be evident in milk drinks alongside a chocolate-toffee blast. Sometimes simple can be great, and this coffee just works.
